NOTE: The “Icarus” SSH Gateway has been decommissioned. The process for accessing files from off-campus has changed. Please refer to Home Directory Access from Linux.
SFTP is natively supported by Ubuntu, and there are many options for SFTP access including command line, SSHFS, and more. What is documented here is the instructions for using the Gnome File Browser built-in to the standard Ubuntu GUI. These instructions will likely work well for other Gnome-based Linux environments.
- On the Ubuntu Start Bar, click Places
- Click Connect to server
- Under Service type, select SSH
- Fill servername.engr.uconn.edu for Server (where “servername” is the name of an on-campus server running a secure FTP service), your username under Username and the path of your website (example /share/dept_web/www.engr.uconn.edu) under folder
- Click Connect
- You should be able to use the File Browser to update your web site now.
